Feminism in Social Media: Project Proposal
In recent years, feminism has become something of a four letter word. The definition of a feminist has become conflagrated with that of someone who believes women are superior to men. Feminists, however, still strive to create a positive name for themselves, while searching for equality between the sexes. Plenty of prominent feminists write articles and publish books on the subject, but few of these ever find footing outside those who already have a strong faith in the subject. The focus of my documentary are those women and men who publish their thoughts and feelings on the struggle for gender equality in media accessible to all.
Websites such as Tumblr and Facebook provide people of the 21st century with a voice that otherwise would not be heard. The rise of social media creates a platform for the rapid spread of thoughts and ideas. Tumblr allows users to create a blog in which they can share thoughts about their fandoms, fanfictions, and, in this case, feminist issues. Facebook allows users to share articles pertaining to a subject of their choice, and post statuses about issues they feel need to be addressed. The importance of social media in the spread of thoughts and ideas is integral to any movement. Allowing those who may not necessarily explore an issue on their own to delve into that world, and increasing exposure of those only tangentially interested in something to more fully immerse themselves.
My documentary will focus on projects and movements which encourage feminism in everyday lives. Those people who believe that we should incorporate certain rhetoric and ideas into our daily struggles. Media websites such as the Who Needs Feminism Tumblr demonstrate the increasing awareness of gender inequalities. There are many websites like the one previously mentioned which focuses solely on feminism, but those who I interview incorporate their thoughts into blogs, or pages which are predominantly about them. The inclusion of feminism in something which communicates who they are is a powerful tool in the world of social media. Communicating feminism as something which can be accessed by everyone, not just women.
